1. Internships and Externships
Doing externships and internships will put you ahead in college! What’s the difference?
Internships
are career-based learning experiences that involve a “real world” work environment and standard workplace expectations. They are related to, but different from, volunteering and an actual job. (Simplified: Doing actual work, usually paid, if they like you they will probably hire you at the end)
Externships
combine academic learning with real world experience. It provides the student with an opportunity to apply classroom concepts while observing an actual work environment. Most involve shadowing a professional in your field of work. (Simplified: Watching but not actually working, usually unpaid)
Majority of the things you need about your profession you will learn by experiencing not just talking about it! Immediately find internships and externships even in your freshman year! It will be easier to get an externship if you are an underclassmen because most internships require juniors or seniors
2. Network
Join clubs related to your major and some in your interest! Joining groups is a great way to learn and make lasting relationships! Keep in mind you are the future of the work force! You will most likely work with someone you went to school with in your professional career! Outside of school join Facebook groups!

3. Save more money than you spend
As a college student this usually is not a problem because you have none! If you do have a job or some type of income make sure you are saving way more than you are spending. Instead of going out to the club do activities on campus that are free for students. Check the student union and student activities to find things to enjoy for free!
4. Build relationships with professors
( not sexual ones)
Your professors are there to teach you! Almost every one of them has worked in the industry you are about to enter in ! Building a reputation with your teachers is so beneficial . They will most likely write you a recommendation if you ask, help you get an internship, and maybe even a job! Also teachers also have a network of people they know and will not mind sharing when asked! They also can give you advice of dos and don’t based off of personal experience.
5. Be single
This one is touchy because I do believe you can be in a monogamous and supportive relationship while in college and it benefit you greatly! However, I do not think it is likely! Traditional college age people are between 17-21 years old! Most of them have never been away from home, do not know what they are actually going to do with their life and do not know who they are yet! So think about it. How can a person that does not know who they are have a relationship with another individual with different needs, likes, and personality that is also trying to figure out who they are have a proper relationship ; all while trying to navigate the stress of college! Also college life is NOT real life! Get out and experience the real world and your career before choosing to commit to a relationship that will bind you legally and emotionally to someone until you die! But that’s just my opinion.
6. Spend time with friends
Even though your life feels crazy take time out for your friends at least Facetime them. Continue to water those relationships!

7. Plan for after college
College is not forever, even though it feels like it! Make a plan that you can start now that will set you up for success after!
8. Apply for jobs
after doing externships and internships begin applying for jobs in your field. Honestly take entry level positions in your field while in college and make strides to move up!
9. Reach out to industry professionals
Contact people that work at the company you want to work at. Reach out and see if you can shadow them or just ask for advice on how they got started.
10. Build your portfolio
Take every opportunity to build your resume and make a portfolio. Having samples of work you have done will put you ahead of many applicants.
